NFL Week 9 Game Preview: Packers at Patriots

February 22, 2019 by George Leave a Comment

Two of the best quarterbacks in the game today, and arguably all time, face off in a Sunday Night Football contest. Only one team brings momentum and confidence into the game, though.

Tom Brady has the New England Patriot clicking on all cylinders, shrugging off a valiant defensive effort by the Buffalo Bills to take a ho-hum 26-9 decision last week. It was their fifth straight win.

Everything is going right for the Patriots, even in the face of injuries. Brady picks apart defenses as his offensive line forms a wall around him. It would not surprise many to see New England run the table into the playoffs.

Except for the Green Bay Packers. Aaron Rodgers knows he was robbed of the opportunity to hand the Los Angeles Rams their first loss in Week 8. He knows the way to get rid of that bitter memory is to take down the mighty Patriots on national television.

Green Bay’s spirit is hard to gauge this week. The team did a good job of jettisoning Ty Montgomery after his mistake in Week 8 led to confrontations with teammates.

Packers vs Patriots Preview

But the team also traded away safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, eliminating the only veteran among a talented, but youthful secondary.

Whether the trades inspire the remaining Packers to step things up or not could determine Green Bay’s playoff aspirations.

Injuries and notes

New England’s Sony Michel is expected to miss a second week, leaving the running to James White and Kenjon Barner.

Rodgers won’t have to deal with Donta Hightower either, as he has been ruled out for Sunday.

Green Bay placed defensive lineman Muhammed Wilkerson on the disabled list last week. Besides Clinton-Dix and Montgomery, everyone else is expected to play.

The team will likely add a running back to the roster before Sunday’s game.

Coaching matchup

Bill Belichick’s legend grows every week. New England emerged from their early-season funk earlier than the past two seasons and his defense is coming together faster in the first year he’s gone without a defensive coordinator.

But games like this are where his genius really comes into play. Rodgers will have to be ready for anything.

Mike McCarthy understands that a long tenure doesn’t always mean job security. The ongoing tension between Rodgers and his head coach will not diminish much after last week’s debacle.

The insinuation that McCarthy’s directions to Montgomery were ignored has been addressed with Montgomery’s trade to Baltimore. However, the issue will not help McCarthy fight off calls for his job.

Who will win the Patriots-Packers game?

Not many people will be comfortable betting against either of these quarterbacks. But the key to the game is whether the Packers swift reaction to last week’s controversy is enough to lift the spirits of Green Bay, who needs the win more than New England to keep their playoff hopes alive.

But Brady… at home… on national television…

NFL Week 12 Game Preview: Patriots at Jets

February 21, 2019 by George Leave a Comment

Over the years, the New York Jets have tried to be a constant thorn in the sides of Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots. Regardless of records or expectations, New York always brings it’s A-game to Patriots Week.

Does that mean a Jets team that arguably hit rock bottom during a 41-10 thrashing at the hands of the Buffalo Bills (and a quarterback signed off the street just three days earlier) might give the perennial Super Bowl contenders from New England a real game?

It might be the only way head coach Todd Bowles saves his job.

But… Tom Brady and the Patriots went into their bye week with the bitter taste of defeat in their mouths, too. The 34-10 whipping at the hands of the Titans must be forgotten.

What better way to forget a drubbing than by rolling over a lesser team in the following game?

Patriots vs Jets Preview

New England doesn’t lose twice in a row very often. They already suffered the ignominy of that feat once this season. They have never lost two in a row twice in the same season during the Belichick-Brady era.

New York still doesn’t know who will quarterback their team. It could be the young and mobile Sam Darnold, which would make this a game with the biggest age difference between quarterbacks ever.

If Darnold can’t get back on the field, Josh McCown will face the Patriots defense, making this a game between quarterbacks with the third highest total age in history.

Injuries and notes

Rob Gronkowski is still listed as questionable but expects to be on the field against the Jets. Julian Edelmann’s ankle and Dwayne Allen’s knee make them more questionable.

Sam Darnold’s foot makes him a game-day decision for the Jets.

Wide receiver Robbie Anderson (ankle) did not practice Wednesday putting his availability into question. Center Spencer Long’s broken finger puts him on the questionable list, too.

Coaching matchup

All season long, Todd Bowles was considered a safe bet to return in 2019 and enjoy a free agent shopping frenzy that would finally give him a roster of players he could turn into a winner. But the Jets didn’t just lose to the Bills before the bye. They rolled over and allowed the Bills to run up the score.

The team looked so bad that local sportswriters called for Bowles immediate firing. Bowles has punched his way through adversity before and while it would be a surprise to knock off the Patriots, it won’t surprise anyone if the team came out competitive and spirited.

Bill Belichick might have cut half his team during the game if they performed like the Jets did last week. Then, he would have picked up 25 new guys off the street and won the next game. The legend is real.

How to watch the Jets-Patriots game

CBS Sports believes the Jets will bounce back and make it a game, too. Why else would they broadcast this contest across the country in any market without a competing local game?

That means millions of fans can tune into the live stream action on DirecTV Now. DirecTV Now lets you watch every NFL-contracted network on almost any internet-connected device from your huge flat screen TV to the smartphone in your hand.

DirecTV Now, like fellow internet TV providers Sling and Fubo TV, deliver the NFL, plus tons of other sports, movies, and TV entertainment for the low monthly cost of a contract-free subscription you can cancel at any time.

There is no expensive equipment needed and they all offer a free trial period so you can see for yourself how great DirecTV Now, Sling and Fubo TV are before you pay for a subscription.

NFL Week 14 Game Preview: Patriots at Dolphins

February 20, 2019 by George Leave a Comment

Miami kept their slim playoff hopes alive with a 21-17 victory over the Buffalo Bills. But they face a formidable task in facing the New England Patriots who simply don’t lose in December.

Tom Brady and his teammates let Minnesota hang around for a while, before scoring two quick touchdowns and shutting out the Vikings the rest of the second half. It was efficient and rather ho-hum; typical of the New England routine as they head into the home stretch.

New England knows they have to win out to assure at least one home playoff date. That is important to Bill Belichick and Brady, and if they feel a game is important, they are extremely likely to win that game.

Everything they do now is setting them up for the playoffs. They reactivated Rex Burkhead last week and Brady wasted no time in hitting him for a 20 yard gain. The running back by committee approach will be defined, as will the pecking order in the passing game.

Patriots vs Dolphins Preview

Belichick’s defense mostly had their way with the Vikings as they crank up their effectiveness in time for the postseason.

Miami is one of four 6-6 teams chasing the 7-5 Ravens (or 7-4-1 Steelers) for the second wild card. The 9-3 Chargers (or the 10-2 Chiefs) will secure the first wild card. The Dolphins know that losses to the Patriots and the desperate Vikings could make their final two games against the Jaguars and Bills meaningless.

Injuries and notes

For Miami, Danny Amendola (knee) is questionable along with center Travis Swanson (ankle). Tight end AJ Derby is out.

New England’s early injury lists consist only of backup tight end Dwight Allen, questionable with a knee injury.

Coaching matchup

Bill Belichick has his team flowing into the playoffs. Other than the Titans’ upset a couple of weeks ago, everything seems to be on cruise control in New England. Belichick showed some unusual emotion on the sideline last week when he offered some extracurricular entertainment options to Adam Thielen after the Minnesota receiver questioned the legitimacy of a Patriots injury.

His players were a little shocked but found the episode rather funny afterward.

Adam Gase isn’t showing too many signs of stress, which probably doesn’t mean he knows a 7-9 record might put his job security into question. Coming into 2018, Gase acknowledged that the Gase-Tannehill combination was under scrutiny and could end if the team did not show signs of playoff worthiness. Whether a near-miss is good enough or not remains to be seen.

How to watch the Dolphins-Patriots game

Fans in New England and most of Florida can watch the CBS Sports production of this game on their favorite internet connected device if they subscribe to Fubo TV.

Fubo TV is a leading provider of internet television programming, which is basically the same as cable and satellite, but with the freedom to watch your favorite shows on your smartphone or computer.

Of course, a simple connection puts Fubo TV, DirecTV Now, or Sling TV on your regular television, too. These companies offer the local and national channels you need to follow your favorite NFL team, plus all the movie and entertainment networks you love for just a fraction of what cable and satellite companies charge.

There’s no expensive and ugly equipment to put on your house and Fubo, Sling, and DirecTV Now will never lock you into a contract.

Take advantage of the free trials offered by Fubo TV, DirecTV Now, and Sling TV to see why you should dump your cable or satellite provider this week.

Who will win the Dolphins-Patriots game?

You can almost never predict a good division game, except when it comes to the recent history of the Patriots in the AFC East. It has been a while since anyone pulled off an upset and it doesn’t look likely to start this week.

NFL Week 15 Game Preview: Patriots at Steelers

February 20, 2019 by George Leave a Comment

Week 14 included seven upset losses, and these two teams got caught up in the net of surprises. Pittsburgh fell to the Oakland Raiders, while New England got shocked by the Miami Dolphins.

Steelers’ fans might not have been totally surprised. They know Ben Roethlisberger has yet to win a game in Oakland, but they might not have expected the Raiders to bounce back from a late Steelers score to retake the lead.

Likewise, Miami has a history of beating Tom Brady in Miami. But no one saw a last-second, three-lateral, and flopping tight end playing defense (kind of) miracle coming until it was too late.

New England put their hand’s team on the field in expectation of a Hail Mary pass from the Dolphins. That is why the last player with a chance of stopping Kenyan Drake before he crossed the goal line was none other than Rob Gronkowski.

Patriots vs Steelers Preview

While the Patriots’ loss might affect their psyche for a while, the Steelers’ loss could affect a whole lot more. After three straight losses, Pittsburgh finds itself clinging to a half-game lead over the Ravens for the AFC North title.

With three other 7-6 teams in the AFC, the Steeler might have to win the division to get into the playoffs.

Injuries and notes

Ben Roethlisberger sat out part of the second half with a rib injury. He will be limited in practice but says he will suit up against the Patriots. He hasn’t decided if he will try extra padding or not.

James Conner missed last week but could be back for this game. Pittsburgh’s woes against the Raiders started with their inability to get a running game going without Conner.

Backup tight end Dwayne Allen (knee) remains the only Patriot on their injury report, but you never know what names will be added when the mandatory reporting comes due on Friday.

Coaching matchup

Bill Belichick and Mike Tomlin are secure in their positions, to say the least. Neither will feel any extra heat from ownership because of one bad loss. Each was quick to identify multiple issues that put their teams in a position to lose on a last-second score against teams they were double-digit favorites to beat.

Should Tomlin lose the remaining three games and miss the playoffs, there will be some consternation in Pittsburgh. But not enough for him to worry about being replaced.

How to watch the Steelers-Patriots game

Pittsburgh will host the NFL Game of the Week in the late time slot. With no competing Fox Sports game, the entire country, with the exception of the San Francisco market, can watch the game on TVs with expensive cable or satellite contracts.

But, if you are among the smartest NFL fans, you might have stopped paying the outrageous cost of cable and satellite to join the internet TV crowd. Internet TV providers like Sling TV, Fubo TV, and DirecTV Now carry all the local and national networks you need to follow your favorite NFL team all season.

When there is no game, you can watch your favorite shows or movies on dozens of other networks included in the low cost of a monthly subscription.

With no contract to lock you in and no expensive equipment to invest in, there is no reason not to make the switch to Fubo TV, Sling, or DirecTV Now.

Take advantage of a free trial to watch this game for free!

Who will win the Steeler-Patriots game?

Both of these quarterbacks are legends to their fans. What better legend story than the passer with his back to the wall and playing with a busted rib leading his team to victory against the GOAT?
